 Be aware of your surroundings. Many crimes are “crimes of opportunity”. We should all do whatever we can to minimize those opportunities. For example, – Be sure to always lock your home and vehicles; – Do not leave any nice/expensive items in your vehicle that may prompt someone to break into your vehicle; – Be alert as you enter and exit your vehicle.

 Police officers are available to perform a security assessment of your home, where they visit your home and review your door and window locks and other features of your home for safety purposes. Please call 815-933-0400 to schedule a home security assessment.

 Neighbors should communicate with one another and be on the look out for anything out of the ordinary, like a strange car or someone you don’t recognize as a neighbor. Keep a list of COMMUNITY UPDATE your neighbors’ addresses and phone numbers in your home. You can use this list to communicate with one another and the police.

 When we see one other on the street, acknowledge each other, wave and say “hi.” When you see people you don’t know on the street, acknowledge them and say “hi” as well. This lets the person know that they have been seen and you acknowledge their presence. If they are there or legitimate purposes, this feels welcoming. If they are there for illegitimate purposes, it puts them on notice that they have been seen and can be identified if they engage in criminal or suspicious behavior.

 The Kankakee Police Department participates in the Nixle community notification service. Nixle allows you to sign up for email or text message public safety alerts customized to you. Nixle will help keep you and your family safe, informed, and connected to your community 24/7. You can sign up for Nixle for free at www.Nixle.com.

 The Police Department can also check on your home when you are away for an extended period of time. They will drive by your home while you are not there to see whether there are any issues and respond as necessary. Call 815-933-0400 to schedule this service. ELECTRONIC RECYCLING Electronic equipment like computers, microwaves, calculators and stereos that no longer work must be recycled, not thrown away with regular garbage. You can recycle your electronic equipment by bringing it to the Kankakee Department of Public Works facility at 401 W. Oak Street between 8AM and 3PM on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
